JOSHUA FALEATUA
Joshua Faleatua (known as Fale) is a freelance dancer and filmmaker of New Zealand and Samoan descent with family ties to the villages of Gataivai and LufiLufi on the islands of Upolu and Savai’i in Samoa. Since graduating from the University of Auckland, Joshua has gone on to work with multiple dance companies, choreographers and directors as both a dancer and filmmaker.
DANCE
As a dancer Fale has performed and collaborated with renowned companies including Footnote New Zealand Dance, Guangdong Modern Dance Company, Chunky Move, Good Company Arts (GCA) Stephanie Lake Company, The New Zealand Dance Company, Movement Of The Human, IDCO, Tino Sehgal, Body Island, and Ta’alili. His artistic journey has taken him across the globe, performing in live shows that have toured New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, Kuwait, the United Kingdom and China.
Growing up in South Auckland, Fale's early exposure to the vibrant b-boy culture ignited his lifelong commitment to the art of breaking, a foundation that continues to define his movement practice. During his teenage years and into his twenties, Fale competed in the hip hop choreography scene with his former crew, The Bradas, who won Gold at Hip Hop International in 2015. Within the krump scene, Fale is known as Big Vision aka FREE 12, and represents the international krump crew/fam 12AF. It is through this understand of contemporary dance, street styles and krump that Fale has trained and developed himself to become a distinctive and versatile dancer.
Alongside his performance career, Fale has lent his expertise to academic institutions, serving as a dance facilitator at the University of Melbourne, the University Of Auckland, Unitec, Brent Street and various dance studios across New Zealand, Australia and the UK.
FILM
As a filmmaker, he has directed, filmed and edited video content for a diverse range of clients, including musicians such as Louis Baker, Tom Scott, Church, Aunty Rae, Jordyn With a Why, D4Y, The Beat Council, Sorrento, Motte, Daniel Millward, ANG135, Edie, Karnan Saba, Cut&Paste, and Gibz.
He has also applied his creative vision to tattoo studios and barber shops, helping capture the artistry of places like Cain, Taupou Tatau, MONK3YS, Tattoo Machine, Living Art Tattoos, Killer Kuts, and Theez Cutter. Beyond this, he has worked with clothing fashion brands such as YOUKNOW, ONE OF N0NE, LRS, and UCSO, helping showcase their designs through his filmmaking.
Furthermore, he has created video content for dance and theatre companies such as Red Leap Theatre, Massive Company, IDCO, Footnote NZ Dance, MOTH, Ta’alili, Taane Mete, Soft.co, Body Island, Momentum Productions, and Conjah. His dedication to storytelling through film is evident in his versatile portfolio, reflecting a commitment to elevating the visual narratives of his diverse clientele.
Fale approaches film with the same exploration techniques and mindset found within the creative process of developing a live dance show. Through this dance-oriented framework, Fale has pushed the boundaries of film creativity and developed a unique style of shooting and editing that has generated innovative films.
