JOSHUA FALEATUA
Joshua Faleatua (known as Fale) born and raised in Aotearoa (New Zealand) is a freelance dance artist and filmmaker of Samoan and European descent with family ties to the villages of Gataivai and LufiLufi on the islands of Upolu and Savai’i in Samoa.
DANCE
As a dancer Fale has performed and collaborated with renowned companies including Footnote New Zealand Dance, Guangdong Modern Dance Company, Chunky Move, Good Company Arts (GCA), The New Zealand Dance Company, Movement Of The Human, IDCO, Tino Sehgal, Body Island, and Ta’alili. His artistic journey has taken him across the globe, performing in live shows that have toured New Zealand, Australia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Kuwait, the United Kingdom and China.
Fale's early exposure to b-boy culture ignited a lifelong commitment to breaking and street dance styles, forming the foundation of a movement practice that continues to shape his work today. Throughout his career, Fale has remained deeply connected to the street dance community by performing, battling, judging and facilitating workshops. Within the krump scene, he is known as Big Vision, also known as FREE 12, and proudly represents the internationally recognised krump fam 12AF. Drawing from his extensive experience across contemporary dance, street styles and krump, Fale has cultivated a distinctive movement language that defines his unique artistic voice
Alongside his performance career, Fale has lent his expertise to academic institutions, serving as a dance facilitator at the University of Melbourne, the University Of Auckland, Unitec, Brent Street and various dance studios across New Zealand, Australia and the UK.
FILM
Fale is a self-taught filmmaker whose practice is deeply informed by his background as a dancer and choreographer. Rather than separating the two disciplines, he approaches filmmaking through the same creative lens he brings to making live performance, following instinct, embracing improvisation, and remaining open to risk, freedom/discovery and the unexpected.
Storytelling sits at the centre of his work, with each project guided by a search for emotion, tone and human connection. Movement is at the heart of Fale's visual language. Whether creating a dance film, music video, documentary or commercial project, he is drawn to the rhythm, energy and physicality that exists within every story. He strives to shape imagery that captures the feeling of a moment, the mood, the tension or energy that best reflects the work, people, artists or brands he collaborates with. Entirely self-taught, Fale has developed a distinctive style of directing, shooting and editing that blends cinematic storytelling with a choreographic sensibility. His work spans music, fashion, theatre, dance and commercial collaborations, always driven by a desire to create films that resonate beyond the screen.
More recently, Fale has developed a growing interest in documentary filmmaking. He is fascinated by the stories people carry and the different ways they experience the world. Through intimate interviews and expressive cinematography, he seeks to create space for those stories to unfold naturally.
